Commonwealth Bank

When Urbanite was asked to animate CBA Melbourne’s newly refurbished activity-based workplace, we ensured the city was given a chance to tell its stories. The collaborative project with interior architects Davenport Campbell spanned signage, wayfinding and environmental graphics across seven floors and used illustration to surprise and shift outdated productivity and workspace paradigms.

DISTINCTLY MELBOURNE

New York-based artist James Gulliver Hancock used the theme of a Melbourne summer’s day to tell stories of the city’s inhabitants with a fantastical twist. The illustrations incorporate quirky details at a micro-scale as a nod to the city’s iconic laneways, uncovering the new, and relishing in the sense of discovery.

SHIFTING PERCEPTIONS OF PRODUCTIVITY

First and foremost, we wanted to spark enthusiasm and inspire staff, who are often working on intense and arduous tasks. We divided the building’s floorplans into a series of visual ‘work’, ‘rest’ and ‘play’ zones. We used references from Melbourne’s urban-laneway culture for the ‘work’ zones, and injected the city’s parklands and nature into the ‘rest’ and ‘play’ spaces.

ILLUSTRATION BRINGS CBA BRAND TO LIFE

A graphic language formed from iconic Melbourne architecture also helps embed the signage firmly into its location. The overall environment is an uplifting and unique portrait of Melbourne while serving as a revitalised workplace for CBA’s staff, visitors and stakeholders.
