A New Way of Working
The Commonwealth Bank wanted to align the business and the needs of employees to enable stronger collaboration. With a true belief in the power of their staff, management committed to and set out to build a premium, world-class work environment for their people.
THE COMMONWEALTH BANK INITIATED ONE OF THE FIRST ABW OFFICES IN AUSTRALIA WHICH LEAD TO A DIFFERENT AND NEW WORK PRACTICE FOR THE BUSINESS DRIVEN BY COLLABORATION AND INTEGRATION.
CBA wanted its impressive new home in Darling Quarter to express the brand’s new workplace philosophies. The challenge was to create a transformative space responding directly to the concept of a flexible workplace environment, the needs of its workers and one which could also complement the company’s innovative sustainability initiatives.
WE EMBEDDED THE FLUIDITY OF CBA’S WORKPLACE IDEOLOGY INTO THE CORE CREATIVE IDEA.
Enthusiasm, idea creation and commitment. These are the outcomes CBA wants to generate with its ABW office fitout. Sustainability, flexibility and the business’ brand values are key themes articulated throughout the 55,000 sqm campus. Along with these key inputs, our human-centred approach investigated the day to day experience of the workplace, and workers’ needs and desires. To satisfy this range of outcomes, we used signage, placemaking, environmental graphics and different colour schemes on each floor helping to delineate team or department ‘zones’. We captured the CBA workspace’s evolving state of change expressing its values of collaboration, innovation and passion.
“It’s great to see how peoples’ drinking and recycling behaviour is changing for the better. The number of reusable coffees is increasing, so decreasing our energy usage. The highest percentage so far for reusable cups was 21%, and we’re aiming for 25% on a daily basis. I'm looking forward to seeing the results over the next 3 months as more CBA staff move into the premises."

BUILDING A BETTER ENVIRONMENT AND KEEPING SUSTAINABILITY REAL, WAS PART OF THE DESIGN’S INTENT.
Our digital wall installation uses custom graphics and live digital feeds to highlight the building’s statistics around energy consumption, water usage and waste recycling encouraging staff to help decrease CBA’s environmental footprint. The building now has an Australian Building Greenhouse rating of 6-Stars. As you move around the meeting room’s partitioned lenticular walls, the moving patterns on the panels have an illusion of depth, a trick to the eye that forces momentary thought and heightens perceptions.
